Description:
In response to the ICSE's nationwide directive promoting healthier eating habits in schools and addressing India's critical diabetes epidemic, Loreto Convent Darjeeling implemented a comprehensive Sugar Awareness Campaign throughout June and July 2025. This initiative aimed to educate students about the significant health risks associated with excessive sugar consumption and encourage sustainable, healthier dietary choices.
The campaign was formally launched with a dedicated school assembly on June 11th, 2025. This assembly served as a foundational educational session, focusing on critical aspects of sugar intake. Key topics included understanding recommended daily sugar limits, particularly the World Health Organization's guideline of less than 25 grams per day for children. Students engaged in discussions identifying hidden sugars prevalent in everyday snacks, packaged foods, and beverages. The session strongly emphasized the scientifically established links between sugar overconsumption and serious health issues like childhood obesity and diabetes, contextualizing this within India's pressing public health challenge.
Complementing the assembly, a strategic visual campaign using "sugar boards" commenced on June 11th. These informative displays were installed at high-traffic locations across the school as mandated by the ICSE campaign. The initial boards featured data-driven infographics clearly outlining the health risks of excessive sugar. They included impactful comparisons of sugar content found in common items like sodas and desserts, alongside positive promotion of healthier alternatives such as fruits, whole grains, and water. The core objective was to integrate awareness seamlessly into the students' daily environment, fostering long-term behavioral changes.
Building upon the initial launch, the campaign was significantly enhanced on July 15th, 2025, with the deployment of an updated set of sugar boards.
